Cambodia vacation tips

Most people that visit Cambodia will visit Angkor Wat temple. Angkor Wat temple and the surrounding temples are so nice to be visited at sunrise and in the early morning and late in the afternoon time towards sunset. There are 2 reasons for this, the light creates a totally different atmosphere, and it is not so hot. Break up your day and avoid the heat of the hot sun. Your pass will be valid for as many visits as you wish – so wake up early, and see the sites of Ankor before it turn hot. Then, mid to late morning, come back to your hotel or guest house in Siem Riep to unwind in the heat of the day. Then, when the weather cools down, revisit to the temples for sunset.

Take your time – if you like to rent a bicycle (pedal or electric), this is the cool ways to see the temples, and it gives you independence but if you are not used to riding in hot environments it may be a bit hard.

Just about everybody in around Angkor Wat is a “guide”. Moto dops (motorbike taxis) will frequently tell you they are guides but just take you from one place to another place. Some guides from the guesthouses are so nice – but do not be careless, many of them have no idea and make things up, and some just reel out dates and figures. A best pocket guide book of the temples and history of Angkor Wat, or a nice Cambodia vacation guide book will be so useful for historical background and also maps. Then, your personal intuition is far the best guide.

Assure that you drink a lot of water. It might be very hot, and it is too easy to dehydrate. Soft drinks can be bought everywhere around the temple grounds although at a somewhat higher price than in the town. Be cautious of ice from the stalls around the temples.

If you wanna eat around Angkor temple, you could find small eateries everywhere. Food is mostly local. If you need western food, there are several restaurants near the main entrance to the Angkr Wat.

You should take insect repellant if you visit in the late afternoon / evening.
It is important to wear a hat – if you don’t have one, they are for sale at everywhere.

Put on decent shoes and be careful with your feet. Thongs could seem comfortable, but climbing around the the Angkor might be unsmooth, sweaty, sharp and some places very dusty. Cambodian travel could be tough on the feet!

If you are visiting Cambodia for more than one day, you will need a photograph for a multi day pass. Have a passport photo with you BEFORE you get to the temples. There is a facility to take photos at the entrance, but there can be long queues.

Assure to take a lot of photos in this country, then sharing them with people in your country when you turn back is a really good thing.

Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, sits on the banks of the Tonle Sap river, at the confluence of two other rivers, the Bassac and the mighty Mekong, and it holds an undeniable charm despite its recent tumultuous and violent past. In the early 1900’s, the height of French colonialism, Phnom Penh was known as ‘The Paris of the East’, and colonial style villas set along tree-lined boulevards still remain – however they are slowly being consumed by development and replaced by modern glass and concrete structures. In 1975 Phnom Penh suffered a forced evacuation by the Khmer Rouge and became a ghost town for five years, followed by many years of international isolation. Today the city has revived and is fast sharpening its contemporary cosmopolitan edge. Chic new hotels and restaurants, shops and bars are springing up all over the city, plus the emerging art scene is attracting international acclaim. Visits to the Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda, and National Museum are a must, as is a late afternoon stroll along Sisowath Quay, alive with exciting riverside life – the restaurants and bars along here being ideal spots for a relaxing drink whilst enjoying the beautiful light shows caused by the setting sun. Phnom Penh is also home to many impressive wats or pagodas such as Wat Phnom, Wat Ounalom, and Wat Langka, and browsing the many local markets such as the Central Market (Phsar Thmei), and the Russian Market (Phsar Toul Tom Poung), interacting with the Cambodian people, are great experiences, as is experiencing your Phnom Penh city tour by cyclo.

Of course, you cannot talk about Phnom Penh without mentioning its more recent harrowing history at the hands of the infamous Khmer Rouge, and the sites of the Toul Sleng Genocide Museum (also known as S21), and the ‘Killing Fields’ Colonial buildings, Phnom Penhof Cheoung Ek. Although visiting these sites can be emotionally straining it allows an insight of what the Cambodian people have endured, and an understanding of today’s Khmer society.

Phnom Penh is a charming city to explore yet far too many people rush through it in a day or two at the most. With its elegant colonial architecture, alfresco lifestyle and laid-back locals it retains an irresistibly provincial charm, so base yourself in Phnom Penh for a few days more, not only visiting many of the new shopping and eating outlets (many offering employment to the less privileged), but also taking day trips to surrounding attractions such as: the hill top temple of Oudong – a former capital; a Mekong river cruise to Koh Dach ‘silk weaving island’; or the small, yet beautiful ancient temple at Tonle Bati, to name but just a few…

Backpacking in Asia. Is this do-able? Tips?
Hi. I’m planning on backpacking around Asia for about 3 months or 4 months. For now, I’ve very roughly planned out what I want to do. But I just want some advice from experienced backpackers out there.

I’m from Australia. So I’m flying first to Singapore. From there:

Malaysia (KL), Thailand, Laos then Hanoi. From Hanoi I was planning on catching a train to Beijing. Then travel down to Hong Kong. From Hong Kong, fly to Cambodia. Then fly back to Singapore. Then fly back to Darwin, Australia where i’ll catch the Ghan train to Adeliade. Then go home…

How much do you think the whole trip will cost me? Any tips, advice and suggestions will be most welcome.

Thank you!
