Bugout Bags – What You Should Know

What should I pack in my emergency bag?

I am 18, so I’m not a juvinile. All my life I have been verbally abused by my father. And my mom, as much as she cares, can’t support me and her on her paycheck alone. When things get WAY out of control I plan on going to a friends house for a week or so until things cool off. My question is what should I pack in my “emergency bag” so I can grab it and go. I don’t need things like food ect. because my friend has that, more like money? I just need a list. Also advice is appreciated.
I don’t plan on leaving for good. Just a week or so at a time. I plan on telling my parents where I am, but I just can’t be in the house with all the fighting. Good points though!

First, the advice. Since you’re not being physically abused, you COULD try to work things out with them in family counseling. Though you’re old enough to live on your own, it’s tough out there right now, even for adults with years of experience. I’m not saying you should stay and take their verbal abuse, but at least see if you can buy yourself some time to save money.

Do you work? Save your money in a separate savings account, so you’re not tempted to spend it on stuff you don’t need. Get a debit card to use just for emergencies.

Start researching your housing situation. Are there any friends to share costs with? Would you qualify for welfare or food stamps (once you move out)? Go to your state’s official website to find out.

You can also look up youth organizations that help young people transition from living at home to getting their own place, without going to a shelter. Call your local Social Services office to find out.

As for emergency stuff, take any medications you’ll need. See your Dr. first for new prescriptions and vaccinations (birth control?). He/she may give extra refills if you’re moving far away, or switching doctors (oh, you can also apply for state health care if you don’t live with your parents, or are older than 19, in most states).

Write down emergency contacts, like friends and relatives, in case something happens to you. Get a cell-phone and extra batteries, if you can afford it.

Depending on where you live, bring extra winter clothing, a first-aid kit, cosmetics, shampoo, etc. A sleeping bag would be good, so you can crash almost anywhere, without inconveniencing people

Make sure you have proper identification (if you don’t have a license; a state ID should be obtained), your Social Security card, birth certificate …but DON’T carry them in your wallet. Get a secure spot that someone can’t lift, like a belt or backpack.

Always carry exact change for bus fare and public phones, in case your cell dies. It’s a good idea to get a pre-paid credit card for emergencies. This way, you can rent a hotel room if need be, or even book a flight.

Before you leave for good, make SURE you tell a trusted friend or relative where you’re headed, when you should arrive and call when you get there. That way, if something happens, at least help can be sent. I hope it all works out for you!
