Backpacking Across Europe – Horrorstories, plain old stories, advice, warnings?

Is there anything I should know and be wary of?

As an American passport holder you may stay in all Schengen countries together for 90 days in a 180 day period. Those are Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France (to include Monaco), Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy (to include San Marino and Vatican City), Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
You may also travel visa-free for 90 days/3 months as tourist to non-Schengen countries like Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Ireland, F.Y.R.o.Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, and the Ukraine.
The United Kingdom allows a six months visa free stay for tourists.
Albania offers 1 month visa free entry by paying an entrance fee of €10.
Turkey requires a visa which may be obtained at the border by paying $20.
Belarus and Russia want a visa which must be applied before travel at their Consulates in the United States.

You may get other answers stating “I have been in …. and could drink at an age of…” That may be right but what i have just put down are the legal requirements without regard how strictly they are enforced.

You can usually get hard drinks in Europe at an age of 18 years. Exceptions are Iceland and Norway where you have to be 20 years, Italy and Luxembourg where it is allowed from an age of 16 years, and Austria and Spain where local areas have different allowances which range between 16 and 18 years.

Beer and wine may be consumed:
• from an age of 16 years in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal and Switzerland.
• from an age of 18 years in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Lettland, Norway, Poland, Sweden and Turkey.
• from an age of 20 years in Iceland

Don’t worry if you are in a German baker’s shop and hear somebody ordering “Americans”. We are no cannibals, just name the “black and white cookies” in that manner.
Be aware of German poets, they are called “Dichter” and on the other hand “dichter” means “closer” and they may try to get closer to you as you really want it if you are female.
Never tell in Germany that you are a student if you do not attend a university. Students in Germany are considered to be at least 18 years and studying at a university or special high school (Fachhochschule). Younger people are called pupils. I know a story of a 15 year old American Exchange Student who reported of a terrible stay in Germany since he always stated that he is student. Everybody thought that he would be a genius being able to attend a university that early and he was just ignored after they found out that he was just a regular high school attendend.
